When it comes to food, you have many choices on what to purchase and eat. One of these choices is whether or not to eat food that is organic. We have previously discussed on what being organic is all about and how it can be a way to steer yourself to eating healthier. Although there are many foods on the market now that are organic, however, there are certain organic foods you should always buy?
The Foods to Buy Organic
Meats
One popular meat that was given a boost was beef when the mad cow disease came about in the 1990s. Another meat that has become organic is poultry, yet both of poultry and beef have to follow the same standards to stay as an organic status. This would be that both would have to be fed grains that has not be grown using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), when you purchase organic meat, you will be cutting back on the massive doses of antibiotics that cows, chickens and other type farm animals receive.
Produce
Fruits and vegetables are one of the number one foods that are purchased organically. There are many produce that are sprayed with pesticides and should give you a second look on why you may need to switch.
There is produce that generally have harmful pesticides used on them, so these foods are best to be eaten organic:
- Apples
- Strawberries
- Grapes
- Celery
- Peaches
- Spinach
- Sweet bell peppers
- Nectarines (imported)
- Cucumbers
- Cherry tomatoes
- Snap peas (imported)
- Potatoes
Most of the produce listed above are usually eaten with the skin on, therefore, you would have to wash them well to remove anything that may be on them that are harmful. One of the best ways to definitely have pesticide free produce is to grow them yourself.
Dairy Products
Milk is a staple food product that you would find in the home. Usually milk is consumed by children which can give a cause of concern since there is a trace of pesticide that is in the milk itself. Organic milk is the best because the cows will be fed the grain without any chemicals and pesticides, just the same as when cows will be used for beef products.
Although to some that are starting out on their organic journey may find that switching to organic foods can be a bit pricey, there are many online websites that can help you to find the best deals or even to provide coupons to make your journey a little easier.
