Herb and spice-infused oils are an easy, convenient way to add delicious flavor combinations to your meals without having to pull out your entire spice rack every time you cook. While more and more varieties of these flavored oils are popping up in grocery stores, there’s no need to spend money on something you can easy make yourself with ingredients you already have in your pantry.

Start with an oil base of your choice. Olive is one of the healthiest cooking oils whose flavor profile goes well with many herbs and spices, but you may want to try a more flavor-neutral oil like vegetable or canola. Combine it with your flavorings in a saucepan over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes until fragrant. The amount you use depends on how potent you want to make your oil. A few suggestions:

Any fresh herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, parsley, mint, chives)
‘Hot’ spicesĀ (red pepper flakes, chili powder)
-Minced garlic, ginger or shallots
-Sundried tomatoes

Once the ingredients have steeped in the oil, allow it to cool and strain it into an airtight container. Because oils made with fresh garlic and herbs can grow dangerous bacteria, it’s important to store your oil in the refrigerator and use it within two weeks.
