If you’re comfortable in the kitchen and have had some experience with kitchen tools and gadgets, you’re ready to go on to the next level. It used to be that food processors and stand mixers were the next best thing in helpful tools, but there are some new players on the block we’d like to tell you about.

Remember digging out the old recipe book with your mom or grandma or even the old and trustworthy 3×5 card box? More and more, home chefs are using their tablets to research, save and use new recipes. But how do you protect that precious tablet from spills and splatters?

The Orange Chef Company has come out with something called Chef Sleeves created specifically for Apple devices that protect the screens of an iPad or iPhone as well as a stand that keeps them upright for easier reading. The cost runs from about $20 to $70.

Spiral Choppers

This gadget can replace a mandoline when making precise cuts on fruits and veggies. Madolines are wonderful tools but can be dangerous at times.

This device safely creates spirals in fruits and vegetables which means you can easily create a veggie pasta that looks beautiful on the plate. Amazon sells the Paderno World Cuisine spiral vegetable slicer for about $35.

The Snug

This is one of the coolest devices we’ve seen lately. For about $18 you can get something called The Snug. It will hold utensils on the edges of pans or keep that spoon from sliding into the pot of jam you’re making. You can even use it to keep a pot lid open … although there are easy ways to do that without a holder.

Healthy Chips

If you or your family are chip junkies, there’s a way to make them healthier with a new tool from Pampered Chef that uses a microwave oven to create healthy and great tasting chips without all the fat of a deep fryer.

This set comes with some tools included like a mandoline and two microwave trays. The mandoline is something that only adults should use at first until some good coaching has been done with your kids. Its blades are designed to be razor sharp and can chop off a finger quickly and easily.

These gadgets are one of the best tools in the kitchen. And it saves you tons of money and headaches trying to dry food like tomatoes and herbs in the oven.

You can make jerkies, fruit leathers or even your own dried herbs from those you’ve grown in your garden. The trays are dishwasher safe and there are usually 4 tiers with screens to allow for small items. Both Nesco and Excaliber put out great models.

Cast Iron

Now is the time to add some cast iron cookware to your kitchen. Lodge is the #1 maker of cast iron cookware which can be purchased at stores like Wal-Mart. Learning how to season your cast iron will keep it in great shape for generations.
