Today is National Cheeseburger Day! We know that it doesn’t normally make the list of healthy eats, but “cheeseburger” doesn’t necessarily have to mean the classic diner or fast food sandwich with its high-fat beef patty, processed cheese, and side order of greasy fries.
Grilling your own patties made of 90% lean beef or ground turkey and topping them with a natural cheese like cheddar or blue is a great way to enjoy a healthier cheeseburger. Ground chicken, Portobello mushrooms, and beans mixed with veggies also make for some incredible burgers. Try going gourmet by adding homemade sauces or caramelized veggies. Put your burger on a whole wheat bun or between two lettuce leaves (a la In-N-Out‘s “Protein Style” burger) for a gluten-free version.
