The raw food movement is becoming more and more popular, especially with the increase of concern regarding health issues and diseases. To avoid sickness, many people are turning to raw food in order to remove toxins and unhealthy habits from their diets to reap the benefits of a raw food diet. Celebrities are also endorsing this diet, such as Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Jason Mraz, and many more. Woody Harrelson has also made waves, as he has published books on the raw food diet and has even opened his very own raw food restaurant, O2.
Why do people go on the raw food diet?
People decide to go on the raw food diet for many reasons, and everyone has their own. However, a popular trend seems to be the health factor. People believe that the cooking of food kills the nutrients and the natural enzymes found within the natural food. These nutrients and enzymes have been said to help with digestion, fight chronic disease, and have even been said to help with diabetes and arthritis. In other words, these people believe “when you cook it, you kill it.” Eating a raw food diet is said to be healthier as it is low in calories, fat, and sodium, while being high in fiber. It is also high in essential vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals.
The Benefits of a Raw Food Diet
The benefits associated with the raw food diet are not scientifically proven, however people believe that a raw food diet can help to get rid of allergies, boost your immune system, help with your memory and cognition, and also help you to lose weight.
The Drawbacks of a Raw Food Diet
While there appears to be many benefits of a raw food diet, there are also some apparent drawbacks. For starters, the diet is low in protein, iron, calcium and other essential vitamins like B12. Also, cooking food actually kills bacteria which can lead to food poisoning. Lastly, since there is no scientific proof that raw foods prevent illness, we do not know if the benefits outweigh the cons. Also, another drawback is that this diet can be expensive. Buying organic could cost more money and buying juicers, blenders, and dehydrators add up!
What Foods Can You Eat on The Raw Food Diet?
How people interpret and follow the raw food diet is different. Some people are vegans and vegetarians, others eat raw fish and meat. Here is a list of some foods people on the raw food diet eat:
Raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, dairy foods (unpasteurized), raw eggs, raw meat, and fish. The main idea is that foods cannot be warmed above 105- 120 degrees Fahrenheit. While some people disagree with this, some people on the raw food diet will eat fermented foods, like yogurts and kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut or simply processed foods, like cheese, however this seems to be less common for those on the diet.
